Buju Banton, the renowned Jamaican reggae icon, disclosed that he has ancestry in Igbo culture.
During a recent appearance on the “Drink Champs” podcast, which is co-hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN, Banton revealed that his Maroon tribe’s roots can be traced back to Nigeria’s Igbo tribe.
He expressed sorrow over the fact that their ancestral territory is currently under threat from the Jamaican government’s decision to introduce Chinese and other foreign individuals into their area with a view to displacing them.
“Our way of life and land as Indigenous people are under threat by Jamaica’s current government. They aim to invite Chinese and other nationalities into the Cockpit region, which is sacred to us as Maroon warriors, in an attempt to take over.” He said this.
On my Island, there are Indigenous warriors known as Maroons who fiercely battled against the British. These brave fighters were called Blackmaroons and they have ancestral roots in Nigeria which is also true for my generation. As per my bloodline, I am an Igbo man.
