The much-anticipated 2-hectare tomato farm, cultivated in June, 2024, by the industrious students of the Centre for Community-Based Farming Scheme (COBFAS) at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), is set to yield its first harvest in three weeks.
On August 7, 2024, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, led an inspection tour of the flourishing plantation.
Impressed by the robust growth and promising yield of the tomatoes, Prof. Babatunde expressed his satisfaction with the farm’s progress.
He stated that the University was on track to launch another major sale of tomatoes by the end of August.
“This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students and staff involved in this project,” the Vice-Chancellor noted.
“We are committed to providing practical agricultural experiences that contribute meaningfully to food security and the development of the economy.”
Meanwhile, the COBFAS tomato farm formed part of FUNAAB’s broader initiative to integrate academic learning with hands-on agricultural practice, ensuring that students were not only equipped with theoretical knowledge but also with the practical skills needed to thrive in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
