At Costco Wholesale, customers traditionally show their membership cards to an employee before entering the store, but the company is now tightening security to prevent non-members from gaining access.
To address the issue of unauthorized use of membership cards, Costco is introducing new scanning devices at store entrances.
Starting in the coming months, members will need to scan their physical or digital membership cards at the entrance using barcodes or QR codes. Guests must be accompanied by a valid member to enter.
An attendant will be present to assist with questions, and if a membership is inactive, or expired, or if someone wishes to sign up for a new membership, they will need to visit the membership counter. Members without a photo on their card should also be prepared to show a valid photo ID or get their picture taken at the membership counter.
