A Russian chess player is facing a lifetime ban and criminal proceedings after allegedly spraying an opponent’s board with a substance containing mercury.
Amina Abakarova has been suspended from all national competitions, pending a criminal investigation.
Russian chess champion Amina Abakarova allegedly smeared mercury on the chessboard of her 30-year-old opponent, causing her to become nauseated.
The 43-year-old is accused of smearing mercury on 30-year-old Umayganat Osmanova’s chess board and pieces, which caused her to become dizzy and nauseated shortly after the tournament started. Osmanova was hospitalised, and Abakarova was stripped of her title,” the outlet added.
In the video, Abakarova is seen inside a room where chess boards are neatly arranged for the players. She looks around for the first few seconds and then stops in front of a particular table. Then she smears something all over the chessboard and the pieces. The video ends with her walking out of the room.
In an interview with Russian newspaper Izvestia on Wednesday, as quoted by NBC News, Osmanova said she saw “some tiny balls” rolling out from under her board during the tournament.
She said she realised the balls could be mercury, so she alerted the organisers.
“I felt ill. I started breathing deeply and could not get enough air. I could not understand what was going on,” Osmanova said.
She claimed Abakarova tried to poison her and had put many people in the building in danger.
