A dramatic scene unfolded at a church in Ngurubani, Mwea, Kirinyaga County in Kenya, when a 52-year-old woman named Rose Wawira stormed the venue with her five children to stop her 58-year-old husband, Chomba Njoka Mutambu, from marrying another woman.
Rose Wawira revealed that she had been married to Chomba since June 2013, in a ceremony that was solemnized according to church rules at Kerugoya parish. She was shocked to discover that he was attempting to marry another woman without her knowledge.
“We went to church to solemnize our marriage according to the canonical rules, and it was granted by a Kerugoya parish. So I wonder how he is wedding another wife without our knowledge,” Wawira stated.
According to Rose, her husband abandoned her and their children to marry another woman named Regina. She also accused him of plotting to sell their family land without their consent.
The confrontation escalated to the point where Wanguru police officers were called to the scene by a church member who witnessed the dispute.
“We were called by a member of the public after an alarm was raised that there was a fight in the church,” said the police boss.
One of Chomba’s children, Lucy, accused her father of neglecting the family. She explained that her mother had been the one supporting their education and taking care of the family while her father planned to sell their land.
“My mother has been struggling to take us to school. Now we suspect he wants to marry another woman so that they can sell our land and leave us with nothing,” Lucy said.
