Belgium’s mixed triathlon team withdrew from Monday’s mixed-relay triathlon at the Paris Olympics after triathlete Claire Michel fell ill following last week’s race in the Seine River, according to the country’s Olympic committee.
While the committee did not specify the details of her illness, it emphasized the importance of learning from this situation to ensure future triathlon competitions are properly prepared and safe for athletes.
Switzerland also faced issues, as two of its athletes, Adrien Briffod and Simon Westermann, developed gastrointestinal infections, though it’s unclear if these are linked to the Seine’s water quality.
Despite prior concerns about pollution in the Seine, officials had assured that the water met safety standards following a $1.5 billion cleanup effort, and races proceeded as scheduled.
