Overnight weather improvements helped fire crews make some progress on the Park Fire in California, but the blaze remains only 27% contained after burning 401,199 acres across Butte, Plumas, Shasta, and Tehama counties for 10 days.
Despite cooler temperatures and moisture, the fire, now the fourth-largest in state history, has destroyed 567 structures and damaged 51 others.
While thunderstorms on Saturday were expected to aid firefighting efforts, they also raised the risk of new fires due to lightning. Heavy winds and the return of hot, dry weather could hinder containment efforts.
More than 6,500 personnel, along with helicopters, fire engines, water tenders, and bulldozers, are working to control the fire, which is suspected to have been started by arson.
Cal Fire is focusing on building and reinforcing containment lines while addressing spot fires and active fire behavior.
