In Arnold, Missouri, a police dog named Vader died after the air conditioning in his patrol vehicle malfunctioned. Vader, a 4-year-old K-9 with the Arnold Police Department, was left in the air-conditioned car while his handler attended to other duties.
Despite the car being left running, the air conditioning system failed in the high 90s temperatures and high humidity. Although Vader was taken to a veterinarian and initially showed signs of improvement, he later died.
The vehicle was equipped with a heat alarm system designed to prevent such incidents, but it failed to activate.
This marks the second instance of a police dog dying in a hot car in Missouri this year, following a similar case in June.
