FTC Chair Lina Khan has called for an investigation into persistently high grocery prices, despite a slight decrease in some essential goods’ costs.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Strike Force on Unfair and Illegal Pricing, Khan emphasized that high grocery prices continue to be a major economic burden for U.S. consumers.
She aims to uncover why grocery prices remain elevated and whether major retailers are exploiting their market power.
The inquiry would seek to expose any potentially illegal practices by large grocery chains and ensure that they are not inflating prices at consumers’ expense. Khan’s request for the probe must be approved by a commission vote, which will determine whether orders are issued to major grocery companies for detailed information on their sales, costs, and profits.
