In China, rescuers are urgently searching for dozens of people missing after Typhoon Gaemi struck the southern province of Hunan a week ago, while emergency workers work to seal breached dykes on overflowing rivers.
The typhoon, the strongest of the year, dumped 26.5 inches of rain on Zixing, causing severe flooding that has resulted in 30 deaths, 35 missing, and widespread destruction, including 1,641 destroyed houses and 1,345 road collapses.
The disaster has affected around 118,000 residents and damaged 34,100 acres of crops, with direct economic losses totaling $849 million.
Rescue efforts are complicated by challenging terrain, and future severe weather is expected in August, with up to three more typhoons predicted and concerns about drought in central China.
