House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) applauded Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s decision to reverse plea deals for three prisoners accused of plotting the 9/11 attacks.
Johnson praised the Biden-Harris Administration for changing course after receiving letters from GOP Oversight and House Armed Services Committee Republicans, who criticized the initial deal that would have removed the death penalty in exchange for guilty pleas.
The reversal followed an investigation announced by Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), which was prompted by concerns from families of 9/11 victims.
By revoking the previous pretrial agreement, Austin has reinstated the possibility of the death penalty for the accused.
Johnson emphasized the need for justice for 9/11 families and criticized the need for congressional intervention to ensure no negotiations with terrorists.
