On November 20th, Her Royal Highness Princess Mary, the Princess Royal, inaugurated the University College Hospital at Ibadan in a ceremony attended by a large and distinguished gathering from across Nigeria and abroad.
The hospital, constructed and equipped by the Federal Government at a cost exceeding £4.5 million, provides outstanding facilities for both medical research and education. In October, the University of London Senate officially recognized the clinical training conducted at the hospital for the M.B., B.S. degrees.
The primary role of the teaching hospital is to offer clinical instruction to medical undergraduates at the University College, Ibadan. Additionally, it provides training and scholarships in various fields including radiography, physiotherapy, laboratory technology, dietetics, hospital administration, accountancy, and medical records.
In August of that year, the School of Nursing transitioned from temporary facilities to a newly constructed building on the hospital grounds. By 1957, the school had 141 students.
Since its inception, 81 students have qualified as State Registered Nurses (S.R.N.), having been admitted to the Register maintained by the General Nursing Council for England and Wales.
