Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the former Senate leader, has refuted claims that National Assembly members are fleeing Nigeria in response to a planned nationwide protest.
Representing the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for Abia South, Abaribe dismissed the allegations that senators are escaping to avoid rallies related to Nigeriaβs rising living costs and economic difficulties.
At Chief Sam Nkireβs 70th birthday celebration in Abuja, Abaribe asserted that these rumors are untrue. He highlighted that he and many colleagues are staying in Nigeria despite the upcoming protests. The event also marked the launch of Nkireβs book, βThe Pay Off Lines.β
Abaribe reassured the public of lawmakersβ commitment to tackling the nationβs challenges. He acknowledged the economic difficulties and the planned protest, stressing that legislators are preparing to meet and discuss national issues.
He condemned the contrast between officialsβ opulent lifestyles and the struggles of ordinary citizens, calling for greater accountability and focus on addressing Nigeriaβs urgent problems.
As per The Vanguard, He remarked, βI know that you must have heard that all politicians, especially members of the National Assembly,
have fled the country because of the looming nationwide protest. It is not true. Weβre all here, and we are even going to sit on Wednesday to deliberate on the state of the nation. We have a situation on our hands; citizens are angry because things are not working as they should in the country.
We want Nigerians to know that these things do happen, but what we have to do is to learn lessons from the experience.
You canβt be buying new planes or building new houses when the masses are suffering. You cannot drive a Rolls Royce to my house and ask me to lend you money because I will not give it to you. This is what Nigeria is doing
