The Senior Special Assistant on Student Affairs to the Ondo State Governor, Hon. Kevin Solomon Olaolu, welcomed the executive members of the National Female Students Association of Nigeria (NFSAN), Ondo State Chapter. The meeting provided a platform for the association, led by Comrade Tunmise, to articulate their goals, values, and pressing challenges. Tunmise highlighted the association’s commitment to independence and the importance of being recognized as a separate entity. She emphasized the need for the association to be treated with the respect and recognition it deserves.
One of the critical issues raised by Comrade Tunmise was the lack of mobility for the association. She requested the provision of a bus to facilitate the association’s activities, particularly in reaching out to female students across various educational institutions in the state. The bus, she noted, would significantly enhance their capacity to mobilize and provide support to members, including those in secondary schools and higher institutions.
Additionally, the association expressed concerns over the state of female hostels on campuses. They appealed to the government for more comfortable and conducive living conditions for female students. The vice chairperson, Lady Comrade Rukayat, further highlighted the issue of physical assaults on aspiring female comrades, urging for an environment that encourages rather than discourages female participation in leadership and activism.
In response, Hon. Kevin Solomon Olaolu commended the female comrades for their bravery and assertiveness. He assured them of the government’s commitment to inclusivity and support for all student bodies. He encouraged the association to continue their efforts without fear of marginalization, emphasizing the importance of modesty and prestige in their activities. The SSA on Student Affairs also acknowledged the concerns raised and pledged to address them, reinforcing the government’s dedication to improving the welfare of students.
The meeting concluded with the presentation of a merit award to Hon. Olaolu, in recognition of his support and engagement with the association. The award served as a gesture of appreciation and encouragement for his continued efforts in addressing the needs of students. The leadership of NFSAN also outlined their future programs, including the “Pad a Girl” sanitary pad distribution initiative, skill empowerment projects for female students, and donations of writing materials to schools. These programs aim to benefit their members and foster a supportive community for female students across the state.
