By Sunday Olugbenga Abire, Special Assistant on New Media to the Governor of Ondo State
Hon. Ebenezer Alabi, FCA, former state chairman of the People’s Democratic Party in Ondo state resigned from the PDP on the 18th of July. He didn’t leave without notifying his party and the whole world while stating his reasons.
Ordinarily, many a Nigerian expresses no shock by how politicians leave their political parties. We are used to it. Even the law recognizes that when parties become webbed in crisis, one can exit lawfully to gain respite somewhere. Nothing is new.
However, the well written letter by the former PDP chairman, stating the reasons for his exit is already a public document. The words are strong. They cannot be wished away. The letter remains a clampdown on the PDP and a timely warning for the rest of us in Ondo state.
Perhaps you didn’t notice that the former PDP chair was at war with his good conscience being a member of a party he described its leaders as money-mongers, looters and self-serving. If you think I am merely magnifying things, read the revelation of the former chair verbatim.
“I cannot, in good conscience, further continue to co-habit with some political leaders whose aim is to make financial fortunes at every cycle of election. The large chunk of money sent for mobilization during the past general elections ended up in the private pockets of these leaders at the detriment of the party’s victory”
Alabi through his timely revelation has put an end to the insanity of making PDP a choice in the forthcoming election. He has armed us with enough information to help change the course of things for our dear state. Isn’t it unthinkable to choose a party whose former chairman described as a gathering of insincere, greedy and corrupt people?
Hear Alabi again:
“Some of them found it easy to extort money from many aspirants during primary elections and ended up allocating delegates’ votes to them in the proportion of amounts coerced to cough out. The overall success of the party is none of their concern, in as much as their personal aggrandizement is satisfied”
For those who may attempt to justify these shenanigans as past events, Alabi has left us with a strong warning that a leopard hasn’t changed its spots. To think the PDP which couldn’t manage its affairs or its members who didn’t wish their party well, will bring any fortune to this state is to wish for the moon. You cannot ask a toad to give you a chair when it’s squatting.
“Unfortunately, the depressing reality is that I am yet to notice any radical departure from this ugly trend, hence my decision to quit in order not to be a part of further political misfortunes” Alabi forewarned.
I trust that the people of Ondo state will not lightly wish away these incontrovertible allegations coming from a former chieftain of the PDP who has patriotically opened our political eyes to the possibility of backwardness if the PDP takes over in Ondo state. If a man kills his own child gleefully, what’s the fate of another man’s child? PDP is compulsively designed to wreck havoc on our collective patrimony and it’s a patriotic thing to keep their members away from our treasury.
The task before us today is simple. Since the PDP and its members won’t stop sharing, we won’t allow profligates take over our heirloom. This is the import of Alabi’s letter and we must hold it dearly to our hearts come November 16.
