Arieh Sharon (1900 – 1984) was an esteemed Israeli architect who played a pivotal role in the development of the University of Ife, now known as Obafemi Awolowo University. In 1963, Sharon, along with Benjamin Idelson, crafted the master plan for the university, a blueprint that was executed over the following years.
Sharon divided the university grounds into three distinct zones: the core zone, the student hostels, and the staff apartments. The core zone, located centrally, houses the primary academic and administrative buildings. The student hostels were strategically placed within cycling distance of the core, and the staff apartments were positioned accordingly.
The design of the buildings in the core zone was notably inspired by the traditional architecture of the palaces of Yoruba kings. While other architects and firms have contributed to the campus’s development outside the core zone, Sharon’s architectural style remains a defining feature of the university, influencing subsequent designs and maintaining a cohesive aesthetic throughout the campus.
