The Super Falcons suffered a 1-0 defeat to world champions Spain in their second Group C match of the 2024 Olympics Women’s Football Tournament at Stade de la Beaujoire – Louis Fonteneau, Nantes, on Sunday, putting them on the edge of elimination.
Coach Randy Waldrum made two changes from the squad that lost 1-0 to Brazil, bringing in Bay FC forward Asisat Oshoala for Veronica Ihezuo and preferring Esther Okoronkwo over new PSG signing Jennifer Echegini.
Spain began aggressively but the Super Falcons defended well, keeping Spain at bay. Nigeria had some chances to score, with Esther Okoronkwo forcing a save from Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll and Captain Rasheedat Ajibade narrowly missing after being set up by Oshoala.
Spain’s most significant opportunity came in the 44th minute, but Chiamaka Nnadozie made a crucial save and Chidinma Okeke blocked a key shot. In the second half, Nnadozie denied Putellas again, and a potential Spanish goal was ruled out for offside.
Despite Nigeria’s efforts, Spain broke through with a superb free-kick from Putellas in the 85th minute. Ihezuo missed a late chance to equalize, and Spain’s win puts them on six points. With Japan’s 2-1 victory over Brazil earlier, the Super Falcons are now the only team in Group C without a win. To advance, Nigeria must beat Japan in their final group match and hope Spain defeats Brazil, while also considering the possibility of advancing as one of the best losers.
