The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has directed enhanced security measures to safeguard the nation’s critical infrastructure in anticipation of an upcoming nationwide protest. This directive was announced by NSCDC Commandant General Ahmed Abubakar Audi on Friday, July 26, through a statement from the Corps’ Public Relations Officer, Babawale Afolabi.
Audi highlighted the NSCDC’s crucial role in protecting essential national assets. “As the primary agency responsible for safeguarding critical infrastructure, we are ensuring that all state commandants, college provosts, and heads of various formations remain on high alert,” he said.
This heightened readiness is part of a broader strategy to prevent disruptions and maintain public order amidst challenging economic conditions. Audi acknowledged that Nigeria’s economic difficulties are part of a global trend influenced by inflation, food shortages, and climate issues.
While recognizing Nigerians’ constitutional right to peaceful protests, Audi expressed concerns about potential exploitation of these demonstrations by criminals and non-state actors. He assured that the NSCDC, in coordination with other security agencies, is committed to preventing any lawlessness or public disturbances. “Our main priority is the protection of lives and property. We will not permit any disruptive elements to compromise our nation’s stability under the pretense of protests,” Audi added.
