Having established the Orisa Odu (Igbadu), let us explain initiation into Ifa (Igbodu).
In Odu Ifa Iretegbe (Irete Ogbe), it is stated that Orisa Odu was so powerful that men were afraid to associate with her. Obatala was the first to do so after learning the secret behind the Egungun Cult. This prompted Orunmila to seek a relationship with Orisa Odu, eventually marrying her. Odu promised to serve Orunmila with everything she had. Upon marrying Odu, Orunmila became very happy and prosperous, saying no one who sees Odu will ever be poor.
Initiation into Ifa, known as Igbodu, means the “bush of Odu” or “the bush where Odu resides.” Since Orunmila married Odu and became rich, people go to Igbodu to marry Odu to solve their problems. “Aba Ni wa owo Ni oruko ti a npe Ifa” means Ifa helps to make money.
Entering Igbodu is seen as marrying Orisa Odu. This is why women are traditionally not allowed to enter Igbodu, as Odu is considered a woman, and a woman does not marry another woman in Yoruba custom and tradition.
Recently, there have been instances of women being initiated into Ifa (Igbodu) due to various writings about Orisa Odu. Since Odu possesses the highest level of spiritual power, it can be regarded as both male and female, similar to Orisa Olokun.
Odu Ifa Okanransode explains why everyone who enters Igbodu must come out with Ide Ifa tied to their arm.
