Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation, Orji Uzor Kalu, has urged young Nigerians to reconsider the planned nationwide protest set for August 1, citing potential economic harm. In a statement on Thursday, Kalu expressed concern over the protest’s impact on the economy and infrastructure.
“I am appealing to our youths to consider suspending the planned August protest to save possible damages and liabilities on the country’s infrastructure and private businesses,” he said.
Kalu, former Governor of Abia State and past Chief Whip of the Senate, acknowledged the difficult times but emphasized that protesting now would not benefit economic development. He urged civil society organizations (CSOs), groups, and youths to give President Bola Ahmed Tinubu more time, arguing it is too soon to judge his efforts.
“No president wants his citizens to go hungry. I know President Tinubu understands the hardships Nigerians face and is working to address them,” Kalu said. He stressed the need to avoid damaging infrastructure, noting that repairs are costly and that oil revenues are not what they used to be. Kalu reminded that leadership is temporary and urged patience, saying, “What was destroyed over many years cannot be fixed in one.”
