The House of Representatives is delighted to announce the successful signing of a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Human Rights Radio/TV, renowned as Brekete Family.
The epochal event, held on Tuesday, at the newly-renovated House of Representatives Media Centre, marked a significant milestone in our efforts aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and public engagement in the legislative process.
Attended by Honourable Members of the House, President of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Dr. Ike Neliaku, and members of the Governing Council, as well as Dr. Iyke Ezeugo who led senior members of the Human Rights Radio/TV Team to represent Ordinary President Ahmed Isah, the driving force behind the renowned Brekete Family.
House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr. who signed the MOU on behalf of the Green Chamber, noted that the partnership was coming at a crucial time. “Over the years, there has been a significant trust deficit between the government and the people. This gap stems largely from a lack of adequate public engagement and transparency regarding the actions and accomplishments of the government,” he stated.
“This collaboration is a commitment to making our work more accessible and transparent, ensuring that the voices of our constituents are heard and their concerns addressed.”
Representative of the Founder, Human Rights Radio/TV, Dr. Iyke Ezeugo, speaking in Pidgin English, emphasised that the programme would provide clarity on the roles and impact of federal lawmakers, addressing pressing questions and misconceptions. “This partnership aims to increase visibility for legislators and their work, enhance outreach, and foster a deeper appreciation of the legislature as an institution,” he added.
Dr. Ike Neliaku, in his remarks, commended the initiative as a demonstration of the House’s commitment to responsible communication, a crucial aspect of ensuring accountability in governance. “Governance must be accountable, and it comes in many forms and ways. So, what we are doing today is very significant i holding our leaders accountable,” he stated.
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, who received the Brekete family in audience shortly after the historic ceremony, expressed his profound delight with the collaboration. He commended Human Rights Radio/TV for their value addition to the country’s democracy, and highlighted the significance of the partnership, which aims to demystify the legislative process and bring it closer to the Nigerian people.
“I commend the Chairman, Media and Public Affairs, for thinking in this direction,” he added. “This is a synergy that will drive our Legislative Agenda in the direction of the purpose for which it was drafted- participatory democracy which is not possible when people do not know what you are doing” Rt. Hon. Kalu affirmed.
