In 2020, Governor Akeredolu and his deputy governor nominee, Lucky Ayedatiwa, campaigned on a joint ticket, making a crucial promise to the students of Ondo State. They vowed to reduce the tuition fees that Akeredolu had previously hiked during his first term, sparking widespread protests from university students. The pledge was a key factor in their reelection, as students and parents alike hoped for relief from the financial burden.
However, after their victory, Akeredolu’s health began to decline, and he passed away on December 27, 2023. Ayedatiwa, now governor, has yet to fulfill the promise of reducing tuition fees. Instead, he has focused on securing his own gubernatorial election, leaving students feeling abandoned and betrayed.
This broken promise has significant implications for the students of Ondo State. The high tuition fees have made it difficult for many to access quality education, exacerbating the already challenging socio-economic conditions in the region. The failure to deliver on this promise has eroded trust in the government and raised questions about the accountability of elected officials.
The situation is particularly galling, given the critical role that Agboola Ajayi, the former deputy governor, played in stabilizing the situation during the protests. Ajayi’s support for students during the protests earned him a reputation as a students’ friendly leader. His candidacy offers an opportunity for students to reciprocate and vote for someone who has demonstrated a commitment to their welfare.
As the election approaches, students are faced with a critical decision. Will they support Ayedatiwa, who has failed to deliver on his promise, or will they turn to Ajayi, who has a track record of advocating for their interests? The outcome will depend on whether students prioritize accountability and action over broken promises and political rhetoric.
Furthermore, this situation highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability in governance. Elected officials must be held to their promises, and consequences must follow when they fail to deliver. The students of Ondo State deserve better, and it is up to them to demand it.
