A four-story building at SS Camp on the hills above Freetown collapsed Sunday night amid the heavy downpour. Community volunteers say that they had to use their bare hands throughout the night trying to rescue people, an effort that was still underway at the time of putting this report together.
They said an excavator had arrived Monday morning to help out. One of the volunteers known as Inspector Lamish said that they had rescued two people and the third was being pulled out. He said that at least seven people were believed to be trapped under the rubble.
The number two man at the disaster management agency, John Rogers, said that they had arrived at the scene and were helping with the rescue operation alongside the army, the police and the Red Cross. No deaths have yet been confirmed.
