The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has responded to recent claims from a research publication suggesting that most paracetamol tablets sold in Nigeria are under-dosed, describing it as misleading. In a statement on Monday, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, expressed concerns about the validity of the research findings.
“NAFDAC acknowledges the circulation of a recent story on social media alleging widespread under-dosing of paracetamol tablets in Nigeria. We have reviewed the research publication in question and find it to be misleading with questionable scientific basis,” she stated.
Adeyeye emphasized NAFDAC’s commitment to maintaining quality standards and immediately initiated a market survey to sample and test paracetamol products following awareness of the news. She also disclosed meetings with the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Group of the Manufacturing Association of Nigeria (MAN) to discuss NAFDAC’s investigative steps.
She added, “NAFDAC’s laboratories undergo ISO 17025 certification annually to ensure testing procedures meet international standards, and equipment is appropriately qualified.”
The agency reiterated its dedication to safeguarding public health by ensuring that all pharmaceutical products comply with stringent quality and safety requirements before being distributed in the Nigerian market.
