Popular 36-year-old American rapper, Wiz Khalifa, has been arrested in Romania for illegal drug possession. According to Agence France Presse (AFP), the rapper, whose real name is Cameron Thomaz, was headlining the “Beach, Please!” festival in Costinesti, Romania, when authorities allegedly found cannabis in his possession early on Sunday, July 14.
Cannabis is classified as a “risk drug” under Romanian law, and a conviction could result in up to 10 years in prison for Khalifa. The Romanian anti-organized crime agency, DIICOT, reported that the rapper smoked cannabis onstage during his performance.
“During a performance at a music festival in Costinesti, the accused was found with more than 18 grams of cannabis and consumed another quantity onstage in the form of a handmade cigarette,” DIICOT said in a statement.
A source told AFP that Khalifa was taken in for questioning by local authorities along with several others. He was charged but released shortly after.
Following his release, Wiz Khalifa addressed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “Last night’s show was amazing. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time.”
