The Lagos State Task Force has arrested eight suspects for selling contaminated turkey seized by the Nigeria Customs Service. According to spokesperson Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, during a raid in Epe, the agency found dozens of cartons of contaminated turkey, previously seized and burned by Customs at a dumpsite, had resurfaced in the market.
Tip-offs from Lagos State House of Assembly member Rasheed Shabi and the Oloja of Epe, Oba Kamorudeen Animashaun, prompted the Task Force to raid nearby shanties, leading to the arrest of eight suspects and the confiscation of contaminated turkey and harmful weapons.
Oba Kamorudeen praised the swift response, emphasizing the importance of preventing a potential nationwide epidemic, especially amid an ongoing cholera outbreak in parts of the metropolis. He stressed the state’s responsibility to protect citizens from selfish individuals exploiting such crises.
CSP Adetayo Akerele, who led the operation, explained that the confiscated turkey had failed health and safety standards, leading to its destruction. He highlighted the severe health risks of consuming such contaminated food, which could cause cancer, lung, or liver disease. The recovered goods were brought to the agency’s headquarters, and the suspects will be charged in court.
