In a recent interview, Rema seemed to throw shade at Wizkid, criticizing the direction of Afrobeats and accusing some artists of adopting a more R&B-influenced sound to appease Western demands.
Rema stated, “With all the success of Afrobeats, we’re forgetting our true identity. Some artists are making Afrobeats sound like R&B. That’s not us.”
He continued, “My new album, HEIS, is a necessary cultural reset. I want to remind fans what real Naija music sounded like in 2015.”
While Rema didn’t mention Wizkid directly, the subtle shade has sparked a heated debate among fans. Is Rema justified in his concerns about the evolution of Afrobeats, or is he simply trying to stir up controversy?
