Former Manchester United manager David Moyes has now shared his thoughts about Arsenal star William Saliba and transfer target Riccardo Calafiori.
Arsenal already boast an impressive defensive unit. Last season, the Gunners conceded fewer goals than any other Premier League side, as they only saw their net breached on 29 occasions.
William Saliba was central to this success. The Frenchman is a talismanic presence the back for the North London club. Despite being just 23-years-old, he is already arguably one of the best defenders in the world. Saliba was able to shine on the biggest stage this summer, as he established himself as a key figure for France at Euro 2024.
Alongside Saliba, the likes of Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes were also exceptional for Arsenal last season. Despite this, though, Mikel Arteta still feels that improvements can be made to his squad in this part of the pitch.
Arsenal are now working on a deal to sign Riccardo Calafiori. The Italian was also able to impress at Euro 2024, and would be an exciting addition to Arteta’s ranks. The 22-year-old is comfortable at both left-back and centre-back, and is an aggressive, front-footed player who excels on the ball and is able to make an impact at both ends of the pitch.
Arsenal have agreed personal terms with Calafiori, but are yet to strike a deal with Bologna for his services. In any case, competition from a Premier League rival for his signature seems to have been seen off, as Calafiori is said to have sent a clear message of disinterest to Chelsea after the Blues entered the race to sign him.
David Moyes hails “outstanding” William Saliba and Arsenal transfer target Riccardo Calafiori
David Moyes, reflecting upon what he saw at Euro 2024, has now given his verdict on Saliba and Calafiori, following their efforts at the tournament. He named the duo in a piece for The Times, when discussing some of the standout defenders in the competition.
The Scot said: “At a European Championship where there has been some fantastic defending and great performances from centre halves… There is quite some competition: the outstanding William Saliba of France, the impressive Manuel Akanji of Switzerland and others including Radu Dragusin (Romania), Aymeric Laporte and Robin Le Normand (both Spain), Riccardo Calafiori (Italy) and Rúben Dias (Portugal).”
Saliba already proved himself to be a big game player for Arsenal last season, as he consistently shone against elite level competition.
Meanwhile, Calafiori has now established himself as a rising star. Arteta is clearly hoping to see the Italy ace continue his development in North London.
