The senator representing the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State, Distinguished Senator Eteng Jones Williams has restated his commitment towards expanding the frontiers of the Season of Sweetness and the dividends of the People’s First agenda of the Cross River State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Sen. Prince Bassey Otu, Governor of Cross River State. He stated this during the inauguration of the Local Organizing Committee of the Prince Otu Cup 2024, an all secondary schools football competition in Cross River State which is sponsored by him.
In a message delivered by his representative, Hon. Ayiba O. Ayiba, the Senator recalled with nostalgia his early days of playing youth football while in secondary school and decried the near collapse of grassroots sports development in the State. He thanked Governor Otu for the developmental drive he is carrying out in the State and enjoined all Cross Riverians to give the Governor maximum support to achieve his dreams for the State. He restated his readiness to continue to partner with the Governor to bring development not only to the Central Senatorial District but across the whole State.
Speaking earlier, the Special Adviser on Sports Development to the Governor, Ekanem Ekpenyong commended Sen. Williams for responding to the appeal for individuals and organizations to partner with the State Government to develop sports at the grassroots for a better sporting future for the State. He outlined the benefits of the proposed All Secondary Schools Football Competition and enjoined others to key into the vision of Governor Otu to develop sports in the State.
The highpoint of the occasion was the inauguration of the LOC by Hon. Agnes Atsu, Commissioner for Sport Development. She recalled that Sen. Eteng Williams had always hearkened to her call for support of programmes and initiatives undertaken by her. She referenced an event in 2016 when Sen. Williams, then a member of the Cross River State House of Assembly was the only individual who supported her programme of empowering women groups across the State. She prayed that God should reward Sen. Williams in all his future endeavours.
Responding on behalf of the newly inaugurated LOC members, Hon. Sunny Udeh who is the Secretary assured the Commissioner that with the caliber of experienced and capable persons in the LOC, the objectives of both the Cross River State Government and Sen. Williams will be achieved to the betterment of the people of Cross River State.
The event, which held in the VIP lounge of the Swimming Pool, U J Esuene Stadium was well attended by critical stakeholders in the sporting sector of of the State.
