THAT SENSELESS VIOLENT PROTESTS IN PORT HARCOURT: A CALL TO ACTION
The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) condemns in strong terms the meaningless protest by the defected 26 members of the state house of Assembly and others loyal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The protest is a reckless and futile attempt to subvert the rule of law and undermine the authority of the duly elected Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.
The tenure of the Local Government Council Chairmen ended on June 17th, 2024, and their removal was in line with the constitution and the laws of the land. The extension of their tenure by the Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule led lawmakers was nullified by a Port Harcourt High Court, which declared the action of the Assembly unconstitutional.
The protest has already led to a near loss of life, with one protester seriously wounded in the explosion of suspected dynamite in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. This senseless violence and destructive tendencies must stop, and those responsible must be held accountable.
IPAC calls on President Ahmed Tinubu to call Chief Nyesom Wike to order and put an end to his sponsorship of the political crisis in Rivers State. We caution those loyal to the FCT Minister to stop instigating political crisis in Rivers State, as there can be no two governors.
His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara is the Governor of Rivers State, and all citizens of Rivers State must be subject to his authority. We urge all stakeholders to respect the rule of law and the democratic process.
We also call on the Rivers State Police Command not to leave any stone unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators and their sponsors are brought to book.
The people of Rivers State deserve peace and stability, and we will not allow the selfish interests of a few individuals to undermine the progress and development of our state.
We stand firm in our commitment to deepening democracy.
