As the United Nations marks the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Senior Special Assistant to Ondo State Governor on Student Affairs, Hon Kevin Solomon Olaolu (KSO) joined campaigners across the World to preach against drug abuse and its illicit trafficking.
The event which took place today in the Ondo State capital, Akure was widely attended by Student Leaders, representatives of the National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and array of Secondary School students within Akure metropolis.
The event took the campaign against drug abuse and Illicit trafficking of hard substances to major roads in Akure as a way to sensitize and orientate members of the public on the heinous danger embedded in the consumption of hard drugs and its unlawful purchase.
In his statement sent to Peoplesmind by his Media Aide, Busuyi Kehinde, the Senior Special Assistant to Ondo State Governor on Student Affairs, Hon Kevin Solomon Olaolu (KSO) explained that the abuse of drug is not necessarily limited to intake of hard substances alone but the intake or injection of drugs without the proper prescription of a medical personnel, which may occur as a result of ignorance or curiosity. He added that the society is currently at a high challenge of people, majorly teens and adolescents who derive undue pleasure in the consumption of hard drugs ranging from Indian hemp, narcotics, and lots more.
“It is no longer News that our neighborhood is now enmeshed with young persons who take to drugs at their freewill. This is becoming so challenging and difficult to curb. Significantly, it is on this note that we have come to join our voices with the United Nations and other campaigners against drug abuse and Illicit trafficking. As a student advocate, I am so determined and prepare to aid the Ondo State Government under the leadership of our indefatigable Governor, His Excellence, Hon Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa to ameliorate the intake of these substances. This is a task for us all, especially parents and teachers. We should always be on the lookout to ensure that these kids are not trapped into such negativity”
Hon Kevin Solomon Olaolu also noted that one of the dangers of drug abuse is inability to reach one’s potentials. He affirmed that there are lots of talents wasting away in their hideouts while others are already losing their mental stability. He therefore implore students and the members of the society at large to flee from intake of hard drugs and never to involve in its purchase or sales.
Speaking at the event was the Ondo State Commandant of the NDLEA, Mr Mumuni Kayode Raji who noted the inherent dangers that drug abuse may pose on individual and the society. He advised members of the public never to be a part of such social vice as it is too detrimental to health. Mr Raji thanked the SSA on Student Affairs and the public for their ceaseless cooperation with the NDLEA in combating drug trafficking and abuse.
The Chairman of NANS JJC, Ondo State Chapter, Comrade Oluwarotimi Tobiloba Joshua emphasized that drug abuse is gradually becoming a norm with increment in percent amongst undergraduates. He however recommend education through enlightenment and seminar as the major catalyst that can enhanced a drug – free environment. He added that the Academic performances of students who are open to taking hard drugs will sure be poor as there may be no focus to studies. He advised those that are victims of drug abuse to shield a new leaf in the interest of themselves and the society.
Hon Kevin Solomon Olaolu appreciated all participants of the campaign against drug abuse and Illicit trafficking. He emphasized the need for the good people of Ondo State to continue in their supports for the Ondo State Government. He stressed that the Ondo State Governor is a leader who remains steadfast and focus in lifting the excellence of the Sunshine State in all ramifications.
