The first Ogoga of Ikere was actually the son of Deji of Akure, Oba Imolumode (1287 – 1299) to be precise
Historians couldn’t remember his real name. He contested for Deji’s throne with his brother Oja-Iyara after the demise of Oba Olorako (1299-1305) but Oja-Iyara (1305-1313) won. He was not happy and he led his loyalists out of Akure and headed towards Ekiti and stayed at the boundary of Ado and Akure then which was Ikere. They moved from their abode, the then Agamo, near Obo beside Ijare and headed to Ikere
Ogoga met Olukere who was the Head of Ikere according to history but on the land of Ado Ekiti. Ogoga settled beside him on Akure land. That’s why Ogoga was where he is today and Olukere at the other side leading to Ado Ekiti. The boundary was demarcated at the centre of the market by both Deji and Ewi
After the death of Obagbeyi (1313-1363), Ogoga was brought back to Akure to ascend the throne. He reigned from 1363-1393
During his reign, he built the Ua Ogoga inside the Deji’s Palace. At Ua Ogoga, you’ll find carcasses of cows and bones. For every Ogoga installed in Ikere Ekiti, they must bring a cow as a sign of respect to Akure. The reason as revealed above. They moved from here to their present abode
The staff of Imolumode called Ijagbolumode is in the Palace of Ogoga of Ikere today
The False Benin Account….
The paramount ruler goes by the title OGOGA OF IKERE EKITI. According to oral history, The first ogoga was a prince from Benin who was the heir apparent to the throne in Benin Kingdom as he was the first child on the throne, but this angered the step mother who also had a son eyeing the revered throne. The step mother was looking for a way to eliminate him and this prompted Ogoga,s mother to escape with her two sons namely: Ogoga Agamo and Deji of Akure who is the elder brother but born before their father ascended to the throne. On their way from Benin, they got to the present day Akure and the beaded bracelet(AKUN in yoruba) worn by the Deji got torn and this place was named Akure, i.e AKUN RE(Bead cut) Deji together with their mother decided to settle there but Ogoga, was a brave hunter, he decided to press forward and got to a place near Akure and decided to stay there and this place is named after him AGAMO ……
Benin/Akure Link ….
The only connection we had was their incessant incursion on Akure land, aided by their superior english firepower
This has been their usual habit until one war where the Asafirin (Chief) of that time who was the maternal son of Oba Ausi, the son of Oba Orudu, was among others forcefully taken as young prince in 1818 during the war and were enslaved for several years in Benin. After earning favour in Benin, he was given permission to return to Akure and became the king in 1832 as Oba Osupa with the full support of Oba of Benin. Those who returned with him back to Akure were given a place to settle and they were known as Ado-Akure today
