Rescuers in South Africa managed to free a man who had been trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building in the town of George for more than 100 hours, said Alan Winde, the head of the government of the Western Cape province.
“Our survivor has been successfully extracted from the debris after more than 116 hours. This is nothing short of a miracle – thank you to all the search and rescue teams!” he wrote on X.
Provincial authorities have decided to continue rescue efforts, which will take another seven to 10 days, Winde added.
Of the 81 people who were at the scene of the collapse of the five-story building on Monday, 13 have been confirmed dead, 29 are alive and 39 are still missing, according to the latest statement from officials.
