A bizarre food trend that has emerged in Japan has been taking the internet by storm for its unconventional approach to preparing Onigiri, or rice balls.
For the uninitiated, onigiri is a beloved and iconic Japanese food that is enjoyed by people of all ages for its simplicity, versatility, and delicious flavor combinations. Whether eaten as a snack, side dish, or main course, onigiri is a satisfying and convenient culinary delight that continues to captivate both locals and international food enthusiasts alike. Onigiri has ancient origins in Japan and is believed to have been consumed for centuries. The earliest recorded mention of onigiri dates back to the 9th century, during the Heian period (794-1185)Onigiri was originally developed as a portable and convenient food for travelers, warriors, and laborers. It provided a simple and nourishing meal that could be easily carried and eaten on the go.
Rather than employing the traditional hand- shaping technique, some young chefs are opting to use their armpits to knead and mould these iconic snacks.
Some restaurants even openly demonstrate the process, which allows the customers to see this unique technique.
This unorthodox method, which is gaining traction on social media platforms, is introducing a fresh twist to Japanese food culture.
Stringent measures are taken to ensure hygiene and safety in the process. Before commencing, all ingredients and body parts that will come into contact with the food undergo thorough disinfection. The chefs then partake in physical activity to induce sweating, using their armpits instead of their hands to shape the rice balls.
How does it taste?
As per SCMP, a diner who tried this new version expressed that it has no different or distinctive flavour other than the usual taste of rice balls
Remarkably, these armpit-crafted delicacies are said to fetch prices as high as ten times those of regular Onigiri in certain restaurants.
