We are drawing the attention of the Governor of Ondo State, H.E Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa and Honorable Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the State to look into the selection process of a substantive chief medical director for UNIMED teaching hospital.
It’s expected that due process and merit is adopted in the selection process for the substantive chief medical director in a critical sector that involves saving lives.
We gathered information about the selection process, it was reported that the leadership of the institution tailored the whole process towards favoring particular candidates which led to manipulation and deviation from the proper and acceptable procedures. The grading system is at variance with the standard.
The selection of Chief Medical Director for UNIMED teaching hospital is shortfall of expected standard and it should be null and void in the interest of the Institution and to protect the good image of the State.
The procedures adopted were faulty, defective and unconventional for the Selection of a Substantive Chief Medical Director (CMD) for the institution.
Merit and competence were jettisoned in the selection process just to favour a crony/cronies in the management circle of the institution. It is expected that UNIMED teaching hospital will continue to suffer from inefficient leadership and poor service delivery in the next 6 years if the phenomenon under discussion is not addressed.
The selection process was obviously done to satisfy the interest of the management.
We can not allow such illegality and illicit leadership selection process to go unaddressed in a State that respects rule of law and has high regards for justice.
All Teaching Hospitals have standard selection criteria which serve as a guide to the selection of Chief Medical Director. University College Hospital (UCH) , University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital, is a typical example of the Scoring and grading system for the selection of potential chief medical director. The management of UNIMED teaching hospital and some selection committee members can not be allowed to bend the rules and procedures to favor crony/cronies for an undefined interest.
We want our teaching hospital in Ondo state to be among the very best in Nigeria and be UpTo standard.
We can’t get thing right if we find it difficult to prioritize merit system in the selection of the institution leadership.
We the concerned stakeholders can not allow this anomaly in UNIMED teaching hospital’s leadership selection to dent the good image of the institution and that of the current administration. There are several serious allegations against the outgoing CMD, Dr Oluwole Ige and some selection committee members, to want to impose crony/ cronies to assist in the cover up of so many atrocities that have rendered the teaching hospital inefficient.
Ondo State is a place of pride and merit is our watch word. The Government puts so much importance on health, we must support the Governor in achieving the 21st century hospital and projects.
Every Ondo State citizen must rise up to the occasion of righting the wrongs by seeking and urging the Government to order another fresh interview that will be supervised by reliable merit oriented external body, and not handing over sub-standard scoring criteria for a selection committee and external panelists.
All the applicants should be subjected to a fair grading system that will ensure the best among them is picked for the position as “merit and standard” is the watchword of our Governor.
