Yesterday, on the 20th of March, 2024, esteemed guests and student leaders gathered to witness the inauguration ceremony of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ekiti State Chapter. The event, graced by the presence of notable figures, saw Comr. Olamide Felix, Olarewaju, a former Chairman of NANS JCC Ekiti State, taking part in dual roles as a keynote speaker and a past chairman of the association.
During his keynote address, Comr. Olamide emphasized the pivotal role student leaders play in shaping educational policy and fostering national development. He called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s education system, stressing the imperative of involving student leaders and stakeholders in the decision-making process.
One of the focal points of his address was the critique of the current curriculum employed in Nigerian schools, which he argued significantly hampers students’ employability prospects. He urged the newly inaugurated NANS executive, led by Comrade Ashaolu Femi Awoo, to actively advocate for comprehensive education reform.
In his congratulatory remarks to the new chairman, Comr. Olamide offered words of encouragement and counsel, urging him to uphold intellectualism as a guiding principle throughout his tenure. Additionally, he commended the exemplary leadership of the immediate past chairman, Comr. Sikiru Adekunle, for his dedicated service to the students of Ekiti State.
The inauguration ceremony, attended by esteemed guests including the Director of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth, Ekiti State, and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Students’ Matters, highlighted the importance of student representation in Ekiti State. With a renewed focus on educational reform and student welfare, the new NANS executive is poised to make a significant impact on the lives of Nigerian students.
The event also saw the presence of distinguished guests such as the Speaker of the Ekiti Youth Parliament, the Deputy Coordinator of NANS Zone D, and past and present Student Union Presidents from schools within the Ekiti state.
