One of the Governorship aspirants on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Brigadier General Felix Olamide Ohunyeye (Rtd) has opined that the sounds of the suffering population are evident as hunger grips the nation, leading to outbreaks of food riots in various regions.
The military top brass turned politician said this regrettable situation stems from a failure in collective governance and exposes the hollowness of claims regarding food security and agribusiness success.
When accosted by press men over the weekend in Abuja, he said that the food riots highlight a lack of patriotism among the ruling class, who have made grand promises but delivered little. “The upcoming gubernatorial election in Ondo state offers a chance for citizens to distinguish between those responsible for the hunger crisis and those who manipulate poverty by offering temporary relief in the form of cash or food. Such short-term measures are unsustainable”. He queried why these individuals have subjected the people of Ondo state to such humiliation.
Ohunyeye promised that if elected, his administration shall be committed to implementing sustainable food security initiatives that support farmers in boosting productivity and encourage youth participation in agribusiness. “We aim to achieve self-sufficiency in food production in Ondo State without resorting to charity. I urge the citizens of Ondo State to refrain from engaging in food-related violence, as it goes against our values”.
The multi-certificated and widely traveled General stated that It is crucial for government to prevent Ondo State from becoming a place where people struggle to find food on the streets, similar to Haiti or Venezuela. “We must harness our full potential, engage young people, protect our farmlands, and increase food production. The people of Ondo cannot solely rely on government palliative and should not be reduced to internally displaced people”
