Arising from the incessant and unlawful grabbing of lands belonging to the Federal College Of Agriculture, Akure, by mischief makers, the leadership of the student’s union of the institution in collaboration with National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ondo state axis, took to the street to protest and register their grievances.
The demonstration, which held within the early hours of today, February 15th, had in attendance all students of the institutions, students’ union leaders, management team of the institution and several security agencies alongside the press. The President of the students’ Union, Comr. Ademola Oduntan who promptly addressed the pressmen at the venue, made known the reasons for the demonstration. In his speech, he condemned the irresponsible act of illegally claiming and selling of the institution’s lands which he described as an open declaration of war on the educational values the school contributes to the society alongside a direct threat to the sustainability roles the lands plays for the institution of learning of agriculture.
Furthermore, he stated how the land grabbers has been molesting the ladies of the institutions, physically assaulting the men, and concurrently exposing them to environmental hazards and other threats, as the lands being grabbed are mostly around the Students’ residential areas. He also didn’t fail to mention the vandalism that has been going on, as these land grabbers goes as far as destroying whatever they find on the land they intend to illegally claim, without minding its economic importance and cost of maintenance.
In addition, the Chairman of NANS in the state, Comr. Salami Rosheed joined his voice with that of the institution and other comrades, as he stated emphatically that, all forms of illegal activities on lands that belongs to the institution would be strictly resisted, using all known methods which might include coming back to the street to cause a total shutdown on all economic activities of the state.
Conclusively, security agencies present addressed the Students and a promise was made to look into the issue and ensure the interests of the students and institution of learning are well protected. Hence, the protest ended well and no form of violence was recorded.
