Customs begins sale of seized food items to Nigerians
The Customs has launched a nationwide sale of seized items, including rice auctioned at N10,000 per bag.
The Comptroller-General, Bashir Adeniyi, highlighted the initiative’s aim to ensure food security and accessibility for Nigerians, particularly amid economic challenges.
The government approved the distribution of confiscated food items at reduced prices to deserving citizens, such as artisans, teachers, nurses, and religious bodies.
Adeniyi expressed concerns about the outflow of food items to neighboring countries, threatening Nigeria’s food security.
Strict oversight measures will be in place to prevent misuse or diversion of the items, with customs officers monitoring the supply chain closely.
Eligibility requirements are in place to ensure fair allocation to those in genuine need.
