Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has announced that the Hamas’s Khan Younis Brigade, one of the main military wings of the Palestinian group, has been completely defeated and rendered ineffective.
According to Al Jazeera, Gallant made the claim in a post on X, a social media platform, where he also said that Hamas was in disarray and looking for a new leader in Gaza to replace Yahya Sinwar, who has been in charge since 2017.
According to Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper, Gallant cited the surrender of 200 Hamas fighters at Nasser Hospital and dozens more at Al Amal Hospital as evidence of the brigade’s collapse. He said that the brigade had been “overpowered” by the Israeli forces and had lost its ability to operate as a military entity.
Gallant’s statement comes amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has escalated in recent weeks with rocket attacks and airstrikes.
The Israeli government has vowed to continue its operation until it achieves its objectives of restoring security and stability in the region.
