The House of Representatives has passed a resolution to halt sports betting in Nigeria, urging the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) to adhere to the Lottery Regulatory Commission Act, 2005.
The decision was made following a motion by Rep. Kelechi Nwogu (PDP-Rivers) during plenary in Abuja on Thursday.
Nwogu highlighted the negative consequences of sports betting, including mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and addiction, as well as strained relationships, financial problems, legal issues, and increased crime rates.
He emphasized the importance of campaigns to prevent these negative social impacts and underage participation in gambling.
