Controversial singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has declared himself a regen of the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
He said his fans gave him the title “newborn Fela” and he reckoned with it.
Speaking in the latest episode of the Bae U Barbi show, Curiosity Made Me Ask, Portable said: “I didn’t give myself the title, ‘Newborn Fela.’ My fans gave it to me. You know I have a lot of fans, my fans brought me to this point.
“Normally, you have to be bold, a lion don’t fear to walk alone.”
To those still calling him an up-and-coming musician, Portable said, “Which superstar do you know that is bigger than me in Nigeria? I am the one they are talking about now: musician that is trending. My talk is trending, my slangs are trending, my movement is trending, my dressing is trending.
“Last year, I was upcoming this year, I am also upcoming. I will be up and coming everyday. Coming with new glory everyday. Newborn Fela. Every year is my year.”
Speaking further, Portable boasted that his song, ‘Zazu’ blew worldwide before Olamide jumped on the remix in 2021.
He noted that Olamide wouldn’t have helped him if he wasn’t popular and his song didn’t go viral.
Portable also debunked claims that he has been riding on the wave of ‘Zazu’ since hitting stardom, stressing that he has released other hit songs and two albums since then.
He said, “Since when we did dropped ‘Zazu’ with Baddo [Olamide], that one has gone. I am the one they [fans] are listening to, I am dropping back to back. If you don’t drop again, they will forget you. If I don’t drop again, they won’t hear me. That is why I am putting more energy.
“It is because I was popular that made Olamide help me. If I wasn’t popular, they won’t help me. ‘Zazu’ blew worldwide. My freestyle went viral”
