The Nigerian Supreme Court in Abuja has affirmed the election of Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State, dismissing an appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Saidu Umar.
The appeal challenged the outcome of the governorship election held on March 18, 2023.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s victory was upheld in a judgment read by Justice Tijjani Abubakar.
The Supreme Court upheld the decisions of the Court of Appeal and the Sokoto State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, dismissing the appeal to nullify Governor Aliyu’s election.
Aliyu, the APC candidate, had won the election with 453,661 votes against Umar’s 404,632 votes.
