The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS/CEDEAO) Commission has officially suspended the Republic of Niger from all sub-regional bodies until constitutional order is reinstated.
The decision, following the summit of heads of state and government in Abuja on Sunday, considers the situation in Niger as a coup attempt, recognising Mohamed Bazoum’s government overthrow.
Effective Dec. 10, 2023, Niger is suspended from all ECOWAS decision-making bodies until constitutional order is restored.
ECOWAS leaders had proposed lifting sanctions if the military junta released deposed President Mohamed Bazoum, a suggestion rejected by junta leader Omar Abdourahmane Tchiani. Sanctions against Niger will be maintained.
