The House of Representatives Committee on Police Institutions has called on Members and all stakeholders in the regulatory and other training institutions within the Police Force to cooperate with it in its quest to provide effective oversight function, as well useful legislation.
The Chairman of the Committee Hon. Aliyu Wakili Boya, made the call at the inaugural meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.
The Chairman, while commending the Speaker of the House Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, for granting him the privilege to lead the Committee, highlighted the areas of their oversight jurisdiction for the next four years.
The agencies within the Committee’s purview include: Police institutions generally; the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State; the police colleges and training schools, and the Police Service Commission.
He expressed optimism in the ability of Members to provide the needed support in achieving the task ahead, saying that “I have no doubt that this maiden meeting is nothing but a beginning of a new dawn.”
“In view of these mandates of the Committee, there is enormous task ahead of us. The leadership of the Committee will dwell more on your wealth of experience, expertise, hard work, team work, dedication, professionalism and passion for national service to discharge the function of the Committee by ensuring adequate provision of funds for the agencies, providing useful legislation, carrying out performance audit and other allied oversight functions on the agencies geared towards efficient service delivery and repositioning,” he said.
Hon. Boya also called for the support of the heads of relevant agencies and training institutions under the Nigeria Police.
“This important meeting has provided a platform for agenda setting and familiarizing ourselves with the working of the Committee.”
The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Dr. Solomon Arase, who also attended the inaugural meeting, in his breif remark, assured the Committee of his agency’s support in the course of its activities.
Dr. Arase, a former Inspector General of Police, was accompanied by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. Frank Mba, who is currently in charge of training and development in the Nigeria Police, as well as Assistant Inspector General of Police, Sadiq Idris Abubakar, who is the Commandant of the Police Academy in Wudil.
