The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest Zone D expresses its heartfelt appreciation for the recent directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police, mandating compliance with the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act 2017. This important development, communicated through a letter from the Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare, signifies a significant step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens, particularly students.
NANS Southwest Zone D applauds the Inspector-General of Police for this proactive measure, which addresses a pressing issue faced by Nigerian students. Far too often, students have fallen victim to unfortunate incidents involving gunshots, only to encounter bureaucratic obstacles when seeking medical treatment. This directive will undoubtedly save lives and alleviate the suffering of victims by eliminating unnecessary delays in accessing urgent medical care.
We commend the efforts of the Nigerian Police Force in prioritizing the welfare of citizens and ensuring the enforcement of this vital legislation. We urge all officers at the Police Colleges in Ikeja, Kaduna, Oji-River, Maiduguri, and Enugu to swiftly implement the provisions of the Act without hesitation.
In a related context, while we celebrate this positive development, we also wish to draw attention to the need for professionalism and respect for the sanctity of educational institutions. The recent incursions by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) onto the campus of Federal College of Forestry Ibadan few days ago and previous records of other campuses have raised concerns among students. We urge the EFCC to exercise utmost professionalism, adhere to due process, and refrain from disrupting the academic environment.
NANS Southwest Zone D calls on all law enforcement agencies, including the EFCC, to recognize the significance of educational institutions as safe havens for learning and personal development. We implore them to conduct their activities with the utmost sensitivity and respect for the rights and dignity of students and staff.
In conclusion, NANS Southwest Zone D reaffirms its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students. We stand ready to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure the full implementation of the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act 2017 and to safeguard the educational environment from undue disruptions.
