Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has approved the demolition of about 6,000 buildings in 30 areas across Abuja.
The demolition is part of Wike’s plan to restore the master plan of the FCT and end land speculation. The affected areas include Apo Mechanic Village, Byanzhin, Dawaki, Dei Dei, Durumi, Dutse, Garki, Garki Village, Gishiri, Gwagwalada, Idu, Jabi, Kado Village, Karmo, Karshi, Karu, Katampe, Ketti Village, Kpaduma, Kabusa, Kpana Village, Kubwa, Lokogoma, Lugbe, Mabushi, Mpape, Nyanya, Piya Kasa, Jikwoyi, and Galadima.
Wike said that the demolition would be carried out after a new survey is conducted. He also said that the government would take back the land and give it to those who want to develop it, but they must sign an agreement to develop it within a specified time.
The demolition has been met with mixed reactions, with some people supporting it and others opposing it. Those who support the demolition say that it is necessary to restore the master plan of the FCT and to prevent land speculation. Those who oppose the demolition opined that it will displace many people and that it is unfair to demolish homes that people have built.
The FCTA has not yet announced a timeline for the demolition.
