The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest is deeply concerned about the alarming increase in robbery incidents plaguing the host community of LAUTECH students in Ogbomoso.Â
It is disheartening to note that these criminal activities have been occurring with impunity for an extended period, while both the school management and the police have seemingly turned a blind eye to the plight of the students and residents.
NANS Southwest acknowledges that the police force plays a vital role in maintaining law and order, but we are dismayed by the apparent lack of urgency and commitment shown in addressing life-threatening situations such as armed robberies. The safety and security of the students, who are the future of our great nation, should be a top priority for both the police and the school management.
We firmly believe that the primary cause of this deteriorating security situation is the failure of the LAUTECH management to conduct a new Student Union Government (SUG) election. The absence of a duly elected student leadership has created a leadership vacuum, leaving the students vulnerable and exposed to such criminal acts. NANS Southwest calls upon the LAUTECH management to promptly announce a date for the conduct of another SUG election to restore effective governance and address security-related issues within the institution and its surrounding community.
In light of these grave concerns, NANS Southwest demands immediate action from both the school management and the Nigeria Police Force. We insist that the police intensify their efforts to curb the rising wave of robberies, enhance security patrols, and ensure the safety of all LAUTECH students and residents in Ogbomoso. The police must recognize the severity of this situation and allocate the necessary resources to effectively combat the menace of armed robbery.
Furthermore, NANS Southwest urges the LAUTECH management to heed the voice of the students and prioritize their welfare by taking proactive measures to restore democratic leadership through a transparent and credible SUG election. The absence of a duly elected student union not only undermines the students’ representation but also perpetuates a state of lawlessness, endangering the lives and properties of individuals within the community.
NANS Southwest reaffirms its commitment to championing the rights of Nigerian students and protecting their well-being. We will not stand idly by while the lives of our fellow students are at risk. We call on all relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education and concerned governmental bodies, to intervene immediately and address this pressing security crisis.
In conclusion, NANS Southwest wishes to assure the LAUTECH students and the residents of Ogbomoso that we will use every available means to ensure their safety and demand justice for the victims of these criminal acts. We will continue to work tirelessly until concrete actions are taken by the school management and the police to bring an end to these robberies and restore peace and security to the community.
