Residents of Minna, the capital city of Niger State, were thrown into unrest this afternoon when a group of armed robbers attacked the Emir Palace. The robbers shot a cashier and palace guards before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.
According to an eyewitness, the armed robbers pursued the cashier from a commercial bank in the city all the way to the front of the Minna Emir Palace, where the attack took place on Tuesday, July 4th, 2023.
It was gathered that Mallam Garba Musa Kuta, the Secretary of the Minna Emirate Council, confirmed the robbery incident to the press. He stated that two palace guards who tried to repel the robbers were shot during the altercation.
The Secretary said that he was inside the palace with Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umaru Faruk Bahago when they initially heard sporadic gunshots, assuming it was just children playing outside. However, as the sound intensified, they realized it was a serious situation and quickly rushed outside to assess the extent of the damage caused by the robbers.
He added that the robbers were able to reach the second gate of the palace and escaped with money belonging to the emirate council.
Garba Musa Kuta also informed that the Niger State Assistant Commissioner of Police and the State Security Department were present at the palace to investigate the incident. He further assured that the two injured guards are in stable condition and receiving treatment at the Minna General Hospital.
