I write to you from Africa in the spirit of Pan-Africanism. There is no part of the Black Nation that is not experiencing challenges. Many of these challenges, including Haiti’s, are pressing.
The cholera outbreak was scary. The earthquakes are scary. The floods are not kind, too. The leadership crisis and gang violence are compounding the misery. Â
The kind of spirit that our forebears used to make Haiti the World’s First Black Republic, we need to summon it and put Haiti in order. Haiti has been through a lot. She needs our love. Now. Haiti once inspired the Black Nation. Something special is also possible now.
We have little say about natural disasters, but we can do something about the leadership crisis and the gang violence. A step towards stemming the tide is that we need to blame no one but ourselves. There may be negative external influence but we are still the ones to be blamed because the negative external forces are using nobody but some of us to cause one another misery, to tear Haiti apart.Â
The leaders of Haiti blame the gangs while the gangs blame the leaders. It does not make sense. Blame game would never help us. We all have contributed in letting Haiti down in one way or the other. Now is the time for us all to take part in putting Haiti in order. Together we can.Â
To the Gangs: We do not fight poverty and unemployment and bad system with violence. We do not fight them by making our bad situation worse. We fight them by making the best of the few opportunities that are still available. Haiti may be in a very bad shape but there are still some positive things about her. Let us make the best of them. And we should remember that bringing out the goodness in us, having the well-being of one another and Haiti at heart are necessary steps towards righting the many wrongs. We are not supposed to let the wickedness of other citizens push us to harm the nation, our home. Being good to Haiti is being good to ourselves and our generation.
To the leaders of Haiti: We need to do more for Haiti. Being selfless, especially now, is not optional. We must be good to Haiti and the ordinary citizens.
To the Diaspora: Some of us have left Haiti because of the misery in Haiti but we must not abandon her. We need to come together and in the spirit of tenacity and patience embark on contributing towards putting Haiti in order. It is a challenging mission but we have no other option. Baby steps are better than no step at all.
To the Ordinary Citizens: We cannot face our challenges in disunity. And we must be there for one another. The ubuntu spirit would never fail us. In unity, lies strength and courage. Truly, we must embrace it.
To us all: We are the only ones who can put Haiti in order. Giving up is not an option. Let us not relent in gathering the pieces. Some of us have had horrible experiences trying to get into or settle in other countries. It is a reminder that we need to keep doing our best to put Haiti in order.
Haiti belongs where there is love and hunger for development. Let us take her there.Â
